Sophisticated Wovens

Natural fibers and wovens. They provide instant coastal chic. They are effortlessly cool, but not so sophisticated. They can easily look worn and cheap. Seagrass, jute, rattan, and of course cane, all fall under the category of natural wovens. A lot of cane furniture is showing up for spring and summer, and it is reminiscent of the worn cane chairs of your childhood. Remember those lattice patterns on the back of chairs, with places that were inenvitably broken and ragged? That’s because, by the time your parents discovered cane furniture, it had gone so far down-market, that the quality had suffered greatly. So if you see natural fibers happening in your Air BNB, but can’t imagine them happening in your own home, I completely understand. But let’s be open-minded, and try a sophisticated approach to wovens that relies heavily on light and dark contrasts.

The Dark and the Light

In a previous post, we explored all of the reasons black furniture looks sharp and chic against white walls. Apply this same concept to wovens this summer. Instead of choosing fabrics, rugs, and baskets all in the same brown or tan color, look for those black wovens that will the contrasts found in a room that is well put together. If you want an airy jute rug, opt for one that has a black border, like this one. This small detail will take your look to the next level. Look for a black-bottomed wicker basket that will give your room more weight than a traditional one. Take some inspiration from our photos, and the vacation homes you visit in the spring.
