This is an odd post for October, but I’m inspired to show viewers what their rooms will look like when the days are longer again, and it’s time to switch back to airy, lighter colors. First, the basics.  A home decor capsule wardrobe is a collection of furniture and home decor items.  Some of the more expensive parts of the capsule are your essential pieces of furniture like:

These foundational pieces are perennial favorites to love all year round.  You’ve carefully chosen them.  You could rearrange them around the room, but you generally don’t move them out.  Onto the next part.

How to Rotate Seasonal Decor for Spring and Summer

Next, you rotate in (and out) your favorite seasonal items.  Maybe each year, you buy one or two new items. Maybe not.  If you’ve chosen wisely, you could shop your home first, and use what you already have.  The seasonal items include:

  • Wall art
  • Throw pillows
  • Rugs
  • Table art, sculptures, artifacts, souvenirs from travel
  • Coffee table books

Think of it as Christmas decorating, but for fall and spring.  Each year, you put up a Christmas tree, and all of the trimmings.  Well, this is similar, except you change the look of your rooms each fall and spring (and summer, or winter), to give your home that refresh it needs, as the seasons change.

How to Rotate Seasonal Decor for Fall and Winter

A Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe is a collection of home decor items and furniture, curated to your individual taste.  This blog has introduced several capsule styles: mid century modern, bohemian, modern farmhouse, and rustic fall, home decor styles.  We even explored how to rotate seasonal decor from summer to fall.  In this post, we examine how to rotate seasonal decor from an easy-breezy spring/summer look, to a cozy-classic fall/winter look.  The goal is to maintain your individual style on a budget, so that as the seasons change, you are not purchasing a complete living room overhaul. Rotating your decor means you will love living in a refreshed home, and your guests will appreciate your elevated style.

Shop Your Home

Firstly, as we transition from summer decor to fall decor, look around your home for interchangeable decor pieces that work all year round.  You will have to shop online for whatever you don’t already have, and we hope you will use this Home Decor Wardrobe Capsule as a guide.

Permanent Collection plus Seasonal Decor

Next, the Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe, saves money and time, because it is based on a few permanent, essential pieces of furniture, and rotates less expensive home decor ideas as the seasons change.  So no matter if it’s winter decor, spring decor, summer decor, or fall decor, you should not have to change your favorite foundational items: your sofa, your armchair, your coffee table, and lighting can stay put.

How to Rotate Seasonal Decor for Fall and Winter

Thirdly, you want to rotate your floral pinks and blues as the days get shorter.  Try moving towards a monochrome Scandi look, that can also be quite luxe.  Why? Having too many busy colors and patterns during long winter nights, can make a space feel small and cluttered.   White allows the eye to travel freely, making rooms feel bigger than they actually are.  Black, because it’s such a contrast, makes the white look brighter.   The Scandinavians have mastered the art of the black and white room.

How to Rotate Seasonal Decor

How to Rotate Seasonal Decor – Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe

How to Rotate Seasonal Decor | Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe | Fall Decor | Home Decor Ideas | Bohemian Decor | Coastal Decor | Summer Decor | Seasonal Decor

A Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe is a collection of home decor items and furniture, curated to your individual taste.  First, the most expensive parts of the capsule can be considered your “permanent collection”.  Your sofa, your armchair, your coffee and accent tables, and your lighting, are part of your permanent collection. If chosen wisely, you can keep these foundational pieces for a very long time. (You can see in the picture above, we kept the same sofa, the same coffee table, and the same accent tables).

Next, “seasonal decor” is the home decor you rotate in and out of rooms as the seasons change.  Throw pillows, wall art, blanket throws, and rugs, are all part of your seasonal decor.  Avoid having everything the same color to avoid being matchy-matchy.  Lastly, add optional layers, like candles and vases.  Now your room is complete.

How to Rotate Seasonal Decor from Summer to Fall

It’s August.  Therefore, the home decor capsule picture in this blog post,  shows a transition from summer to fall.  That means soft blues give way to orange, red, and gold.  However, the transition to fall, can mean something completely different for you.  Perhaps you like a shift from soft lilacs to deep purple as the seasons change?  I think that would be lovely, and you should give this style of decorating a try. You pull out your Christmas tree once a year.  So why not pull out your fall seasonal decor once a year?  Visitors will notice how you mix things up.  Guests will appreciate your elevated style.

Shop Your Home

Maybe you have already have a beige rug with flecks of gold in your attic?  If so, pull it out, and find some affordable wall art to coordinate with it.  Then find some throw pillows in similar colors for a cohesive look.   The whole goal is to maintain your individual style on a budget, so that as the seasons change, you are not out purchasing a complete room overhaul.

Shopping with a Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe as Your Guide

Hey, I have no green thumb.  So, succulents are friends of mine.  What’s not to like about them?  They are green and vibrant, they take little water, and they look great in groupings with other plants.  They are the cheapest and the easiest to care for.  They are the best-low water plants to raise indoors.

Plenty of sun, not so much water.

Keeping succulents alive is easy.  When you buy them potted, they come with the type of dry, rocky soil that allows proper drainage.  If you keep them indoors, keep them by a window that gets plenty of sun.  You will only need to water them once every 2 weeks, or when the soil completely dries out, whichever comes first.    Succulents will let you know when they need water more frequently.  The leaves will elongate, and some will start to shrivel and look wrinkly.  Add water immediately if you see this, and switch to watering them more frequently than before.

Too little sun, too much water.

One sure-fire way to kill a succulent, is to put it in a place with no sun, and/or water it too often.  These conditions don’t allow proper drainage and evaporation.  The leaves will turn yellow, limp, mushy, or all three.  If you notice any of these signs in your succulents, try to remember the last time they were watered.  If you feel you are watering them too often, cut back to the “once every 2 weeks” rule.  Then observe your succulents, to see how they live.

What is home decor without plants?

Indoor plants are essential to home decor. However, it’s true, many people are not motivated to raise a fragile plant.  Succulents are the answer. They are truly the best low-water plants to raise indoors.  If you travel a lot, and have no one to water your succulents, you may find they are starting to look, um, not-so-good.  If a plant doesn’t look good in your apartment, feel free to give it to a friend, or someone who has time to care for it.  And don’t feel bad about it.  It’s only a plant 🙂

Rustic Fall Farmhouse Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe

How to start a Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe – Rustic Fall Farmhouse Style

Rustic Fall Farmhouse Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe | Farmhouse Decor | Fall Decor Ideas | Home Decor Ideas | Home Decor on a Budget | DIY Home Decor | #furniture #homedecor #falldecor Timeless Decor | Modern Farmhouse | Instagram

Start with 4 neutral essentials as your foundation:

The Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe starts with a good foundation, and rotates accessories as the seasons change.  Start with your favorite sofa and chair.  Use a nesting table, because it can be used as both a coffee table, and an end table.  Add a quality floor lamp.  That’s your foundation.

Seasonal Decor

Just as your fashion wardrobe requires more layers in the fall, your home decor needs blanket throws for chilly nights.  Choose 2 or 3 colors to play around with.  You’ll need your favorite wall art.  Decorative pillows for the sofa, or the chair, are also a must.  You’ll need a throw rug you can roll in (and roll out) as the seasons change.  The wall art, the pillows, and the rug, should all  contain similar flecks of color for a cohesive look.  However, they should not all be the same solid color, less the look will be too matchy-matchy.

A Few Words About Plants

Now, more than ever, plants are important in an indoor space.    As the days get shorter, and we spend more time indoors, we need plants to clean the air inside.  Plants keep us happy, as they represent life. If you have no green thumb, don’t be afraid to add faux plants.  (Later, we will talk about real plants that are impossible to kill.  So look out for that.)  Plants complete the room.  If you are craving visual clarity, you can stop here and be done with the look.

Add Optional Layers

If you are craving visual plenty, you may require a bit more to realize the look you desire.  Therefore, consider adding optional layers. Now is the time to start thinking about hygge (hoo-guh), the Danish concept of coziness and happiness.  Poufs, baskets, and candle lanterns, are not only beautiful, they are also cozy,  And voila!  A rustic fall farmhouse living room.

So what’s happening in this Rustic Fall Farmhouse Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe?:

  1. Previously used, neutral essentials are staying.
  2. Just a few new items are being added.
  3. Seasonal decor is being switched out.
  4. Optional layers are added according to your unique individual style.

The goal is…… with each passing season, you’re not out shopping for a complete overhaul of your room decor.  (Just as you wouldn’t completely overhaul your closet wardrobe each season).  That’s the idea.

So, we are coming to the end of summer, and saying goodbye to summer is not easy.  Check out our post on Back to School College Dorm Room Decor, if you have  loved one heading to college in September.

Who doesn’t love a good modern farmhouse look?  It’s cozy.  It reminds us of home.  It reminds us of days past at grandma’s house.  It reminds us of grandma’s good cooking.  Did you know, the look can be modernized and streamlined to fit any taste or budget?  The secret is a Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe.

A Home Decor Capsule Wardrobe is a collection of home decor items and furniture, curated to your individual taste.  Some parts of it can be considered your “permanent collection”.  First, your sofa, your armchair, your accent tables, and your floor lamps, are part of your permanent collection. If chosen wisely, you can keep these foundational pieces for a very long time. Next, “seasonal decor” is the home decor you rotate in and out of rooms as the seasons change.

Seasonal Decor

Just as your fashion wardrobe requires more layers in the fall, your home decor needs blanket throws for the sofa or the chair.  You’ll need your favorite wall art.  Decorative pillows for the sofa or the chair are also a must.  You’ll need a throw rug that you can roll in (and roll out) as the seasons change.  The wall art, the pillows, and the rug, should all  contain similar flecks of color for a cohesive look.  However, they should not all be the same solid color, less the look will be too matchy-matchy.  If you are craving visual clarity, you can stop there and be done with the look.

Add Optional Layers

Finally, if you are craving visual plenty, you may require a bit more to realize the look of your room.  Therefore, consider adding optional layers.  Poufs, baskets, and candle lanterns, are beautiful and cozy.  A pretty vase, or a wooden bowl for snacks, is also a civilized way to warm up a room.  And voila!  Instant Modern Farmhouse.
